Whew! Or should I say SWOOSH!!! The Nike Superman pulls off another victory. I am exhausted from the sheer thrill it was in watching the tournament today. My son and I were glued to the TV for what seemed like an eternity because the round took sooooooo long. It was just excruciatingly fascinating golf. Tiger really is something special and when you see him perform like he did today you just KNOW this guy is in a class all his own. To watch him sink that putt on the 18th was unbelievable. I can only imagine what it must have been like to actually BE at the tournament. I can watch golf even if Tiger isn't playing, I enjoy it that much. However, when he does play it is MUST SEE TV because you just know on days like today he'll do something we'll be talking about for years to come.

MSJGA / The First Tee of Memphis gets a Ski Lift!

At a recent MSJGA / First Tee of Memphis Parent's Association meeting in attendance was Ms. B.J. Worthy of the Memphis Silver Bullets Ski Club. Ms. Worthy presented MSJGA with a check in the amount of $5,378.72 in honor of Cal and Melba Vinson for their commitment and work at MSJGA. The Vinsons are also one of the origninal founding members of the Ski Club. Since MSJGA/First Tee of Memphis is a non-profit organization it operates primarily on grants and donations from corporations, groups and individuals. The monies will be used to support the programs the youth's participate. Thanks for the lift Memphis Silver Bullets. The kids really appreciate it and thank you for recognizing the efforts or Cal and Melba.

First Tee of Memphis Junior Golfers WIN!!!

Estanula Neigborhood Association held its annual golf tournament at Tunica National Golf Course in Tunica, Ms. Junior golfer Clifton Jordan II was invited by Adams-Browne Dental Associates to put a team together and participate. Jordan decided to selected his team members from his fellow junior golfers that participate with him in the MSJGA/First Tee: Malik Luckett and Jalen Mathews. There was another junior golfer scheduled to play but failed to show up so the team of three set out on an almost impossible road with the weather in the 30s and the conditions very windy. However, the juniors took it one shot at a time and with a team score of 64, they were the winners. The group of season adult golfers were stunned but impressed by their victory. The President of the Association, Ed Browne III jokingly said the juniors are welcome to come back next year but will have to play from the champions tees. Clifton, Malik and Jalen are all honor students and represent the best and brightest of junior golfers at MSJGA/The First Tee of Memphis. They display the core values of the program in such a manner that typifies the youth that the program produces. Look for these juniors to do well playing for their respective schools and on the junior tours.

Memphis Junior Golfer to Play with the Pros--AGAIN!!

Sophomore junior golfer Clifton Jordan II is set to play in the PGA event the Zurich Classic in New Orleans in April. Cifton is a member of the First Tee of Memphis and was invited to play in the event by the First Tee home office.

Jordan has had a exciting golf experience over the past 6 months. In the summer of 2008 Clifton was one of 54 boys who qualified to play in the nationally televisied event on the Champions Tour Event, the Wal-Mart First Tee Open. Jordan, paired with local Memphian Champions Tour Player and former Charles Schwabb winner Loren Roberts, played at the picturesque world renowed Pebble Beach in Monterrey, CA. Jordan and Roberts were in 3rd place going into the final round of the event that Sunday, ending the day at 19th.

Below are pictures of Clifton warming up on the range after having breakfast with Loren Roberts in the Player's Hospitality Suite. Later, Roberts gives him a tip on hitting shots out of the bunker.

When asked about the experience Jordan said, "It is so difficult to explain how wonderful the event was or how excitiing it was to meet and play with a golfer I have heard about for years at First Tee. Mr. Roberts is the best. I was nervous playing in front such a large audience and on TV and he was so patient with me and he help me with some great tips. It was a huge honor for me to play with him. I will never forget that experience. I feel very lucky to have played it."

Clifton, who up until this past fall had played both football where he was the quarterback and golf in the same seaons, realized that he was going to have to make a choice between two sports that he loved to play. There were days where he'd leave school to play a golf match and change into his football uniform to play a game later that same evening. Eventually golf won out. He concluded that golf was more fun and offered him more opportunities than football ever could and with less chance of a serious injury. He is invariably compared to looking like Tiger Woods with most of his friends calling him "Little Tiger." Look like he made the right decision by all accounts.

In November 2008, Clifton was one of 50 top students selected from over the 2.2 million First Tee participates worldwide to participate in the Future Leaders Forum held in Orlando, Florida. The Forum, sponsored by The Toro Company and Walt Disney World offered those 50 students to learn about leadership skills, college choices and careers as well as careers with the golf industry outside of being a PGA Tour Player. Here Clifton is speaking to the group on teamwork and later enjoying some fun time at the Disney theme park.

In addition to being involved in the First Tee and golf, Jordan is an honor student at the prestigious Memphis University School where he writes for his school's newspaper and is involved in several community organizations and routine displays his speaking and leadership skills. He says that the MSJGA/First Tee program has done more than focus on playing golf but it has help him develop other talents that have made him a stand-out person. In addition he credits former MSGA junior golfers and present collegiate players, Clay Myers, Reginald Newton and Larry Dorse for setting a good example for him to follow. We're all proud of this multi-talented young and upcoming MSJGA Junior Golfer.

Presitigous Bill Dickey Invitational Gets a NEW HOME!

After years of playing the event in Orlando, 2009 will see the 10th Annual Bill Dickey Invitational move to a new home as he moves the golfing gala event to Atlanta. Our own Larry Benson Dorse graduated from Alabama A & M this past December. Larry was one of the first students in the program and despite being busy with his studies and playing on the golf team, Larry has never forgotten his roots. He comes back every summer to work with the kids in the program and he does an outstanding job. Larry is a poised and focused young man. MSJGA Junior Golfers are winners. We salute Larry and wish him the best in all his future endeavors. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!

Former First Tee Memphis Jr. Golfer Turning Heads at the Collegiate Level

Clay Myers II is a freshman on the Jackson State University golf team and he is having an outstanding first year . The team is coached by Eddie Payton, brother of the football great Walter Payton. Clay's team opened its 2009 spring schedule by hosting the Pizza Hut/AT&T Intercollegiate at Dancing Rabbit Golf Course in Choctaw, Miss. Thirteen teams, including the Tigers, participated in the 36-hole tournament, held on Feb. 22-23. At the Pizza Hut/AT&T Intercollegiate Tournament the Tigers as a team finished fourth with a final score of 629 (322, 307) with Tennessee State University, Southern University and Alcorn University finishing seventh, eighth and ninth respectively. Clay's two day score of 157 garned him a 16th place finish individually

On March 18 in Gonzales, Louisiana Clay's team were the defending champions at the Southern University Presidential Golf tournament. The Tigers won finishing with a tournament score of 582. Clay Myers received medalist honors as he finished with a tournament low score of 141. He was also named to the Presidential All-Tournament team. Go Clay!!!!!

Clay is also getting to see some beautiful sights as he plays college golf. He and his teammates recently traveled to Lihu Kauai, Hawaii to participate in the 10th Annual Kaua'I Collegiate Cup hosted by Western Kentucky University. The tournament was played on the Wailua Golf Course just outside Lihue on the island of Kaua'i, "The Garden Isle" of the Hawaiian Islands. The 6,981-yard oceanfront course, one of the-rated public course in the nation, plays at par 72. Overall the Jackson State Tigers finished in 10th place with an impressive three round total score of 926 (304-307-315). Individually, Clay Myers was the low scorer on his team and ended the tournament tied for 20th place with a total score of 223 (75 - 74- 74).

We look forward to watching Clay, along with his teammates defend their title next month at the 2009 SWAC Men's and Women's Golf Championship to be held in Alexandria, LA. The event is scheduled for Sunday, April 19 - Wednesday, April 22.

MSJGA is so proud of Clay. He embodies the attributes of a MSJGA Junior Golfer--talented, focused and driven for success. We're going to see our Clay on the tour one day!!!!!

FALL SESSION GETS UNDERWAY

Well, the MSJGA the First Tee of Memphis had it's Fall Orientation and Fall sessions have gotten underway. They have a great group of kids again this year. So many eager faces and minds like sponges in all levels---Ready To Listen & Learn.

Saturday's session opened with the Birdies and Eagles was very informative. The instructor spoke and ask questions of the seasoned youth of the program on a variety of topics from golf to college. Before going out on the course, the Program Director Bryan Yarbourgh had them perform a great exercise where groups of 3 were assigned to research a golf top like chipping and they had to go the Learning Lab, research the topic, write down talking points and each group had to stand up and speak on their assigned topic. It was a fantastic exercise and they group learned valuable skills about public speaking.

Saturday was the first day of the fall session and the Birde, Eagle and Ace session went off very smoothly. Didn't really seem like a first day at all. It was good to see the kids excited about playing and listening to all of their stories about summer vacation. The weather was great. This promises to be a great session. Especially with the upcoming tourament in October.

MSJGA/First Tee Junior Golfers Meet Tiger's Coach

The MSJGA/The First Tee of Memphis Junior Golfers were priviledge to attend a putting clinic put on by the tournament officials of the Stanford St. Jude PGA event in Memphis. The clinic
was held in conjunction with the PGA event at the TPC Southwind. The junior golfers were thrilled to get the chance to meet Tiger Woods' coach, Hank Haney.

Mr. Haney was wonderful with the kids. He answered ALL their questions and after which he gave a putting lesson to each child that asked. He offered them good advice on being great players on and off the course. It was a real treat and I know the kids will remember meeting Mr. Haney for a long, long time. He is a very special man and has a geniune interest in helping the kids get better at golf

They juniors got a chance to tour the course grounds and see the behind the scenes work that goes on at a PGA event. Everthing from the grounds keepers to the Shot Link to actually meeting some of the professional golfers who were out there that day to practice AND to see the FEDEX Cup that will go to this year's winner of the playoffs. It was an EXCITING DAY.

FedEX sponsored the event and they treated the group fabulously! The kids enjoyed free soft drinks, pizza, salad, ice cream and water. They each received a FedEx Cup towel, ball marker, and hat for their participation in the event.

13th Annual Future Tour Championship

I am little late posting about this outstanding tournament that my son and I look forward to attending each year. My Apologies!

The tournament "seemed" smaller in turnout this year though when I looked at the player listing it didn't appear to be a smaller turunout than last year. Perhaps its may aging eyes (LOL). However, there is nothing wrong with my internal thermometer because it was what is always is down there in Greenville, MS --- HOT!!!!

My son had a great time again this year. He made a lot of new friends and connected with some old ones and it made for a great tournament. The people that put it 0n, particullary Dr. Bill Brozovich, the Tournament Director are a great group of people. Their's is a labor of love and they do a fantastic job from start to finish. From the moment you turn onto the groups of the Greenville Golf and Country Club, you get the feeling this as a PGA event. They meet you at your car in a golf cart to take the junior players to the club house so they don't have to walk with their clubs too far. They have a shuttle bus that runs the players and parents to and from the driving range. It is just well organized from start to finish.

The Top Ten Finishers in the 14-15 year old Boys Age group show off their trophies and plaques. Job well done gentlemen!

Nike Golf Rumors Say New Clubs on the Horizon

I was surfing a few of the golf blogs I like to look at and read that Nike is indeed due to release new irons sets in November of this year. They say pictures are to be released sometime in August. Plans right now are for 3 sets of forged irons. A full cavity set, split cavity set, and a blade set. If anyone gets early pictures and I see them, I will post them.

My son has been waiting on some new Nike clubs for a while. He's been playing the Nike Junior, the first Slingshots and for the past 2 years he has been playing the Slingshot OSS and he has LOVED every set. His friends wonder how much "workability" he has with the clubs and all I can say is he is beating a lot of them with the cavity backs. I have the now discontinued NDS iron set and I love them. They perform great for a $400 dollar set of irons. So there you have it; Nike makes great golf clubs.

On Monday, June 23, 2008 our Memphian Bria' Sanders will be featured on WMC-TV 5 during the 6 a.m. broadcast. I know schools are out and most of us might not be up at 6 a.m. but set your recorders as we wouldn't want to miss this special. Golf is a difficult sport to enter and play and when we have junior golfers such as Bria' on the move in the game, we should support their efforts by learning all we can about them and finding ways to support them as they better themselves in the game and the golf industry.

First Tee of Memphis Mini Bennie Golf Scramble a HIT!

Saturday's event had a wonderful tournament. It was a great finale to the end of the Spring Program session. The junior golfers were bright-eyed and raring to go at 7:30 in the morning. It was great to see so many of the parents, siblings and grandparents out to show support. I tell you coming up on the green for the ninth hole with all the fans sitting there in lawn chairs watching, felt like a PGA event. It was really nice. For some of guests, it was the first time they had ever been on the golf course and the first time in a lot of instances that they had seen their child play the game.

I was so enthused by the interest in the game. There was one young child in my son's group who is a beginner and this kid LOVES the game. At the end of nine holes he wanted to play more. I think he could have easily played 18 holes. That is the beauty of what Mid-South Junior Golf Association started in kids who have been traditionally denied access to the game, it gave them a chance to be exposed to the game and to learn it in a fun environment. And Saturday's event was just that. The DJ, was great. He played music all age groups could identify with. And the gentleman doing the cooking grilled some mean burgers. He had a line all day waiting on his burgers. It was a great time and I anticipate and hope the event gets better each year.

Women's Golf Better on TV this Week

Well, Lorena Ochoa did it again---SHE WON. Not that there was any real doubt. This young golfer IS THE REAL DEAL. She is turning women's golf upside down and she has done it so quickly. Yesterday, Lorena won her fourth STRAIGHT title by winning the Ginn Open. Her putting was just OFF THE CHARTS. She was sinking 30 footers as if they were 2 footers. In the win at Ginn (hey I rhymed), Ochoa became the first woman to win four successive titles since Annika Sorenstam in 2001. SHE CAN PLAY!! Before it is all over with I really think she will surpass Annika in all the records. I love to watch Lorena play. She is the "new" breed of female golfers that have glamorized the sport and I think that is a good thing, especially as it relates to television coverage. In addition, Lorenoa is known to go out to the grounds workers at tournaments, who are like her, Mexican, and talk with them and sign autographs. Gotta love that. She doesn't forget her heritage. Congratulations Lorena. Way to go!!

As for men's golf this week, well I love men's golf too but some players I just can't watch. The winner yesterday, Boo Weakley is one of those guys. I am sure he is nice guy. Just from the interviews I have heard of him he seems to be but my GOD, the spitting of tobacco right as you are being interviewed after your last stroke to win the tournament is just G-R-O-S-S. The PGA fines the players for swearing, well I think they need to really fine for "spitting tobacco" on air. And for goodness sake, why wouldn't he put an iron to those pants. Boo can do better. He's the "NEW" John Daly on tour and he appears to being living up or down to that title. But good for Boo too. Anyone who can win an event two years in a row has done something special and that Boo did, I just couldn't bear to watch it through. The bright spot for me, Camilo Villegas. He did get a lot of TV coverage for a change and I really enjoyed watching him. He's one of the young male golfers that are changing the image of golf from and "old man's game" to one that a physically fit looking player plays. I just want Camilo to WIN one soon. I really think is just around the corner from winning. Just gotta work on that putting.

Who says you can't mix sports?
Well, kind of sort of. Golf season is in full swing and Memphis has some great opportunities to enjoy a game you and your golfing pals love AND to support worthy causes at the same time! And even if you don't play golf don't let that stop you from making a donation or sponsor other golfers in the event. Two NBA players (Tony Delk, Brownsville, TN native and Brevin Knight, former Memphis Grizzlies and resident) hold golf tournaments here each year. I have heard great things about their tournaments and they deserve the support of local golfers.

The event will have two shotgun starts, one at 7:30 a.m and an afternoon shotgun start at 1 p.m.

A NAIL BITING FINISH By Tiger Woods

WHEW!!!!! That's all I can say after having watched the first round of Tiger Wood's match for a second time. All the matches were good but Tiger and J.B. Holmes' match was one for the ages. It was edge of your seat tv. I never thought Tiger would pull out a win after beening down 3 after 13 holes. But STOP! HOLD THE PRESSES! Tiger WASN'T done! This man knows how to make golf exciting. He proceeded to operate like a surgeon on the clock and methodically takes care of business. He won four straight holes with three birdies and a 35-footer for eagle! Can you believe it!!! It was awesome and he did that famous fists pump of his. I know that is going to be a picture on the front of some sports page in the morning. Tiger has never been down that many holes before in match play and come back to win. All that changed yesterday. Up to that point in the day Tiger was not playing up to Tiger standards. It hurt me to watch but he turned on a switch and the light came on and he went to work. Poor J.B. was just stunned. There was nothing he could do. He just joins a long list of golfers who have been bitten by the Tiger.

If you missed it be sure to tune into the Golf Channel for the highlights. I can hardly what for tomorrow. Unfortunately Camilo Villegas didn't win his match. In fact, they didn't even show him once on the broadcast. That was truly disappointing.

Halle Berry's Celebrity Golf Classic Announced

Well, who knew the beautiful and intelligient Halle Berry was into golf. Apparently she is and is hosting her first celebrity golf classic. Personally, I am THRILLED to see an African American Female Celebrity get on board and start hosting golf events like this to benefit a worth organization or group. The proceeds of this event are going to benefit the Jenesee Center. The quote from the Jenesee Center web site states that, "The 2008 Halle Berry Celebrity Golf Classic is Jenesse Center’s inaugural golf tournament that supports our efforts in continuing to expose the issues around domestic violence and invites men and women to join together in combating this societal problem. The Golf Classic culminates the Silver Rose Weekend and will prove to be a fun filled and rewarding day. We are excited and proud to be able to present this inaugural event to you."

Halle's tournament will be held in Los Angeles and it really isn't that expensive when you consider what the money is going to benefit, if you live in the area. Don't Miss Tiger This Week On TV at the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship

I like watching golf on television and listening to it on XM Satellite radio.
I LOVE watching golf on television if Tiger is playing. He's playing this week and he's matched up with one of the young guns, J.B. Holmes, considered to be one of the top 3 long hitters on the tour. So get those TiVos ready. This should be exciting. I'm also waiting to see what my other favorite player will do, Camilo Villegas. Unfortunately Anthony Kim, was slated to play against Tiger was pushed out when Ernie Els, who first said he wasn't going to play, changed his mind at the last minute so Kim won't be their.

The World Golf Championships - Accenture Match Play Championship is unique in that there is a cut EVERYDAY. There is not much room for error. It is like NCAA March Madness in a sense. Players have to bring their A-game on every hole. They have a printable bracket you can get at http://i.cdn.turner.com/pgatour/docs/accenture-match-play.pdf to follow along. This ia perfect way to learn more about the players. In the match play format there are 2 players playing togther and whoever wins the most holes out of 18 advances. As you can see, one bad day of play and you are out. Its pretty exciting because while I am always rooting for Tiger to win, this is the tournament that ANY player can win if he is playing good that day.

I get this question quite a bit and I must admit I am surprised myself that I had not written about this subject before now. Most of my blogging has been to help those who already play golf, because my son does and some of his friends and I do too, despite the ever increasing rise in my scores. I don't think I realized how many people who have limited knowlege of the game would like reading this blog but they do and so I get that question, "What Next?" As I have been updating my blog this question "What Next?" hit me like a ton of bricks because what good is it for me to post about the various tournaments and golfing news primarily for the novice junior golfers, particularly African Americans if they have no idea of what to do next after having realized they want take up the game. So I am attempting to give a very generalized "What To Do Next" discussion/explanation from my personal experiences and observations as well as what I have seen as my son's experiences since we took up the game nearly 5 years ago.

First and above all, I am assumming a child or his parent has a DESIRE or expressed some interest into learning about the game and how to play it. If they don't, then the rest is the waste of your time and hard-earned money. DESIRE is absolutely necessary for a junior golfer to have any success at this game because it is a very simple and yet very difficult game all at the same time. But truthfully, isn't that with ANYTHING you want to do in life. Sometimes its hard, sometimes its difficult but it is that DESIRE that keeps you coming back. So DESIRE is crucial to success at golf as it is in life.
Secondly, I would say are 2 equally important issues for your junior golfer:

(1) Enroll them in a junior golf program, such as Mid-South Junior Golf Assocation / First Tee of Memphis. While this program will NOT TEACH your junior the game of golf the way they need to be taught to play high level tournament play, it WILL PROVIDE your junior, particuarily African American junior golfers and other minorities who have traditionally been denied access to the game, the ability to learn more about the game in a "welcoming environment." The reality is that the majority of us who play golf are only doing so for recreational purposes and so a program like the MSJGA/First Tee is perfect for learning the game you can play for a lifetime. The founder, Mr. Charles Hudson says, "The kid is so much more important than the golf swing." So at MSJGA you learn not only the fundamentals of the game but you are mentored on the skills you neeed to be successful in life. I love this program and were it not for it, my son would not be enjoying all he has from the game. They introduced us to the game and helped us learn to love it and so much more. We've made friends for a lifetime in this program. Also, check with the local golf courses, private and public, to see when they have junior clinics. Most of the private courses hold them and many times they are open to juniors who do not have memberships, especially during Spring Break and during the summer months.

(2)The second equally important issue is getting one-on-one instructors from a qualified PGA professional. These professionals are normally employed at every private, semi-private or city-run courses and they offer lessons whether you are a member or not of their clubs. As with any type of sport, you need a good instructor to find out your true potential and so I would recommend that you get your child signed-up with a professional for more indepth instruction and evaluations on the fundamentals of the game. The instructors at the First Tee are wonderful, wonderful mentors who donate their time and advice to our youngsters but they are not professional golf teachers and sometimes through well-meaning attempts, they teach habits that are hard to break. This happened to my son so I am writing from experience. So I feel it is very important that you get them lessons. It will build their confidence learning the proper techniques of the game and they will play better. Expect to pay anywhere from $40 -$125 and hour for private lessons but you don't have to get them every week. If you are a member of the First Tee, they have an arrangement where you can get lessons at reduced fees once you child has reached Birdie Level in the program, though I didn't have much success with that program a few years back. At that time, the then Executive Director made it difficult to nearly imposssible for me to get my son signed-up. I finally gave up and just started to pay for lessons when we had the extra cash. I understand from the present staff they are trying to get the program up and running again.

Golf isn't cheap and it takes a lot time but that shouldn't be a reason to keep your junior from learning the game. There are ways to learn this game IF you have the DESIRE and are PERSISTENT and are willing to make the SACRIFICES.

So don't be discouraged at the cost or at the fear of starting a new game that many of us have been excluded from. It is a great game and there are far more great people in the game of golf than the few bad apples that will try to discourage you. So sign them up today. A whole new world will open up to you. I promise you that!

2008 Spring Session Registration for MSJGA / First Tee of Memphis

Registration for the 2008 Spring Program at MSJGA / First Tee is underway. The program is open to kids from ages 8 - 18 and prior golf experience is not required. Orientation / registration will take place at the MAM Park Golf Course, 2146 Ball Road, Memphis, TN 38114 (near Memphis International Airport). The Female Counterpart to Tiger Woods Wins the LPGA Season Opener

Annika Sorenstam has been called the female Tiger Woods because of her dominance on the LPGA, since bursting on the scene as a rookie in 1994. Before her victory on Saturday at the SBS Open in Hawaii, she had won 69 times on the LPGA, 84 victories overall, 10 major wins, and she shot a round of 59 once. Saturday's victory was the 70th LPGA victory for the 37-year old player from Sweden. The LPGA and World Hall of Famer has won eight Player of the Year awards and eight more money titles. She is No. 1 on the career money list, going over $21 million with her win at the SBS Open. Her 2007 season was her only season where she did not win a single event, due to a neck and back injury that kept her out of play most of the season and seeing her relinquish her World's Number One ranking to the hot young LPGA star from Mexico, Lorena Ocha.

Annika was quoted as saying: "Some wins are more special than others and this is one them. Now I want to stop talking about 2007 and start thinking about 2008.I think this proves I am a contender again." Sounds like Annika wants to be number one again. This should make the 2008 season of the LPGA "MUST SEE TV" for golfing and sports fans alike.

United States Junior Golf Tour 2008 Spring Schedule Released

Memphis based USJGT, operated by Cliff Frisby and Mark McClellan, has posted its spring schedule. The tour is now in its 7th season and it continues to grow, holding tournaments all across the state of Tennessee, some in Georgia and Mississippi. It is the ONLY tour in the area for Memphians that has tournaments that are relatively easy for us to get to without incurring incumbersome traveling expenses. The USJGT only has tournaments from March thru May, the spring months and is dormant during the summer months until late July, when they hold the Memphis Summer Classic.

Unlike the TGA Junior Tour, the USJGT does not separate players according to skill and age level. Their division is done by grade level only, i.e., Boys: High School (Grades 9-12), Junior High (Grades 7-8), Rising Stars (Grades 5-6), Future Stars (Grades 3-4).
Girls: High School (Grades 7-12), Rising Stars (Grades 3-6). You can play up a division with higher grade levels but if you switch you have to stay in that higher grade level the rest of the season.

Personally, I think it is a great experience if your junior thrives on competition and/or wants to gain tournament experience to better his/her game in hopes to play at the next level-college. See their web site www.usjgt.net for more information, the schedule and fees involved.

Sign-up is NOW OPEN for 2008 Toyota TN Golf Association Junior Tour Season

They have instituted some new policies this year. Go to http://www.tgajuniortour.com/ to read the new procedures and policies and to sign-up for the upcoming summer season. The schedule is available for viewing but it won't be open to register for the specific tournaments until March 24. The most notable change this year is that if you are going to play in the Masters Division (for the more advanced players) you will have to be invited. I think they made this change because last year some juniors played in divisions that were inappropiate for their skill levels, creating slower play and unfair advantages in some instances. Hopefully, the new implementations will make things better. I think they will.

The TGA Junior Tour is a great tour and their is a skill division for EVERY junior golfer. For the novice to the more advanced players, there is a division suited for each golfer. Let's make our summer tour a good one. It was a lot of fun last year. I could tell the players had a great time no matter how they played and that is what good golf is all about-enjoying this great game no matter your score.

2 MSJGA Junior Golfers Selected as 2008 First Tee Scholars!

I am very proud to announce that Clay Myers II (Germantown High School, Memphis, TN-pictured in a previous post below) and Tyler Johnson (Overton High School, Memphis, TN-First from the left at right) have been named as 2008 First Tee Scholars, where their academics, leadership skills, character development and chapter and community involvment were evaluated. Those selected are awared merit-based scholarships and provide financial assistance for the expense of attending a college or university. More than 20 colleges and universities across the U.S. participates.

Clay and Tyler are both veteran members of Mid-South Junior Golf Association / The First Tee of Memphis. It is a prestigious honor for them to be selected and as a parent volunter I am thrilled to pat them on the back and say, "A Job Well Done and Good Luck." It is a testament to their hardwork, dedication and years of perserverance. In addition, Clay is the receiepnt of a "Named Scholarship" worth $10,000, to be used at the school of his choice. FANTASTIC!!!!! They are both outstanding young men with impecable manners and maturity. In a time when so few African American young men are recognized for the many wonderful things they accomplish, it is great to see these two accomplished young men recognized for their outstanding work inside and outside the classroom. It serves to encourage their other fellow junior golfers in the program to follow in their footsteps and it shows that despite what the media protrays, their is a lot of good in our communities that should be recognized and praised.

MSJGA Junior Golfer Signs to play golf at JSU

Clay Myers II, a participant at Mid-South Junior Golf Association / The First Tee of Memphis, will be heading south in the fall to play golf at Jackson State University on the Tiger's team. Clay is a fine and deserving young man and I am thrilled for him. His dedication has paid off. He has worked so hard and I have watched his game grow tremendously. He will be playing under Coach Eddie Payton, the brother of NFL great Walter Payton. JSU is lucky to get Clay. He is going to be a great addition to the team. He knows how to play under pressure and JSU might be back on top of the SWAC with the addition of Clay, after ending a 19-year reign last year with a loss to Texas Southern University.

Clay will will join another former MSJGA junior golfer standout, Reginald " Reggie" Newton on the squad. Congratulations Clay and good luck guys. We know you'll do great things.

Nike and Clicgear Equipment News

Happy New Year Readers! And a Happy Belated Valetine's too. I am making up for not posting recently. Nothing like getting a phone call from someone who ran across my blog and telling me how nice it was to light a fire under my feet to get me back to it. It was a long holiday season but it's time to get back into swing with the 2008 golf season underway. With a new golf season brings new equipment and it's an exciting time for that.

Nike Golf News
February 2 was deemed Sumo Saturday. It was the day where all over the country Nike released their news Sumo 2 Drivers and other equipment at retailers and consumers could demo them. I took my son and a friend to our local Golfsmith for the event and they got a chance to try out the new Sumo line, including the SQ Sumo 5000 )the traditional shape) and SQ Sumo2 5900 (the square). The first thing you noticed is that the new Sumos have that matte finish to it instead of a more glossy finish. Personally, I liked the shinier finish but the new one looks classy. The second thing you noticed when you strike it is that the sound is a DEFINITE IMPROVMENT, though I thought it was fine before. However, a lot of golfers claimed it was too loud. When a Sumo was struck everyone turns around to see because it was just that loud. I so seldom hit a great shot that when I do, I WANT everyone to turn around and see me (LOL). But that's me, a novice. The "players" complained and Nike accomodated. So they have dampend the sound a great deal and you won't find it annoying. Thirdly, and this is just from my observation in the store on the launch monitor, this new sumo is LONG and STRAIGHT. The 18 year old hit it 330 yards and it was DEAD STRAIGHT with the square one. My son, 14 hit it and it went straight for him too. So this club lives up to being straighter and longer. Give it a try if you get the chance.

Nike also introduced the improved Nike One Series ball in the Black and the Platinum. My son likes the Platinum and we went to the course early that demo day to play 18 holes and that ball is LONGER than the 2 previous versions of the Platinum. The ball is definitely hotter across the face. He said the feel was slightly less than the previous model but then again that was just one round. He might need more time to get use to it. You can see the difference in this ball and I am sure you can with the Black too.

They have the Sumo and Slingshot irons out too but haven't had to chance to hit them. They both look great. Other manufacturers have new equipment but I'm a Nike Girl. Try them out when you get the chance.

Doesn't require much work and leaves you free to enjoy your game. Ladies Golf: ADT Championship!

If I were 2o years younger I know what I'd be doing, playing professional golf. The ADT Championship has a $1,000,000 payoff to the winner. One Million Dollars! That is a lot of cash for professional sports in a women's sport. The format is not like your typical stroke play tournanment in that there is a cut every day until they get to the winner. PGA GRAND SLAM 2007

I haven't been watching much golf on television this past week. I don't know why, but I just couldn't get into the the PGA Grand Slam. Now I see all this post coverage and the event was held in BERMUDA and it was a beautiful site. I hate I missed it. Angel Cabara won and all the news say it was an exciting victory for him.

Still, I am impressed with they way Bermuda set itself up to host and promote the event. I wish I could have been there. That place looks gorgeous and I can just imagine what the golf courses look like and play like over there. Tiger Lands Yet Another Million Dollar Endorsement

I don't think there has ever been an athlete that can promote a product quite like Tiger. Today I was reading about the new Gatorade product that Tiger has a licensing agreement with Gatarode. There will be 3 flavors all inspired by Tiger and will debut next spring; cherry-blend, citrus-blend and grape flavors .He was paid $100 million dollars for a five year deal. This deal pushes Tiger closer to becoming the first athlete to earn a billion dollars. MSJGA / First Tee Grand Opening

The "GRAND OPENING" of Mid South Junior Golf Association / The First Tee of Memphis was held last Monday, at the Bridgestone Firestone Park. The event got off to a late start but it was good to finally see the facility, hear the progress report and future plans. The highlight of the day for the kids was getting the opportunity to hit off of the huge driving range. There is a lot of work that has to be done but the vision for it is incredible.

There were numerous dignitaries that made an appearance. I just wish the media had been out there to cover such a major event. When the facility is completed it is going to be FANTASTIC!!! Here are some photos of the event.

Week 3 of the Fall Session

It was another warm day!

I am always amazed at the fact that no matter how many times I am at MSJGA, I always managed to meet a child I had not seen in the program before. Well today, that child was Chandler (left, photo by John Mitchell), and he is a charmer. From the moment you lay eyes on Chandler he will steal your heart with his personality. He is so full of energy and an eagerness to play golf that is unmatched. Mr. Wilson taught Chandler's father and his twin brother golf years ago. And now its Chandler's turn. Mr. Wilson gives great meaning to the phrase, "giving back to others."

Going to the range is great fun for the kids but part of that comes responsibility and they have to go and pick up all the balls they hit when they run out. Chandler was the youngest out there but he did the most work. He was like a power battery going no-stop. As you can see, my older ones were taking a break.

Korey decides he needs a Gatorade break on the golf cart. Clifton claims he is supervising the pick up. Looks like he's on a Gatorade break as well.

The Par I students (below) got their first chance to go onto the driving range to move into hit iron shots. They were quite excited and nervous all into one. It is really fun and amazing watching how fast they pick up the game and how easy it is for them to learn it. I was proud of all of them. Take a look!

In the photo below we have members of the Par II group signing a card for the new golf head coach at Michigan State, Mr. Sam Puryear. The kids were quite excited to learn that he was an African American and so they wanted to send him a congratulatory card. They made one and mailed it to him. Ross Williams (center) and Michael Darling (right) served as my ambassadors of the card. They did an excellent job making sure that all the kids signed the card. Thanks gentlemen!!

I found out Saturday that Mid South Junior Golf Association is going to hold its Grand Opening at the Bridgestone Firestone Park property on October 8. It is time for us to move on into our OWN facility so we don't have to be subjected to the rules of others. It will be a long while before the facility it completed but at least now its a beginning that we have been hearing about for the past 4 years my son has been there. Its a good thing and I can't wait for the Grand Opening. I'll try to get a lot of shots to post. Hope to see a lot of you there.

During the afternoon Birdie and Eagle session some of the coaches were hitting balls on the range with the kids and I tell you this, the coaches can strike that ball. They are living proof that golf is a game for a lifetime.

Mr. Wilson really put the hammer down with his driver. I was blown away.

Coach Parks was not to be outdone and he put on a show for the kids. The coaches still have it!

Today the President's Cup begins and this will be the last event Tiger plays until his tournament, Target World Challenge in December. The President Cup is golf featuring the us against them - U.S. Golfers vs. International Golfers. I can't say it is all that exciting but hey, I love golf so I'll watch it. Who knows, it just might get more exciting if the points are close for the teams. The winner needs 17 1/2 points to win the Cup. At present, the US has the cup.

Be sure to tune in from Thursday to Sunday for the events. I think it is on TNT Friday and one of the major networks Saturday and Sunday.

Week 2 of Fall Session at Mid-South Junior Golf Association / First Tee of Memphis

The Fall Session continues to roll on with much success and enthusiasm. Yesterday fun was had by all that showed up. The Par I session is full of faces eager (and some not so eager) ready to take on new lessons in golf and in life skills. The parents too. We've got a great group of kids and parents who are definitely jumping right in helping out. It is great to see and I think that is a large part of that new energy I was speaking in a previous blog entry. When you have the parents meeting and getting to know each other and working side by side it makes the program all the better. I am enjoying meeting new parents and reconnecting with old friends. It is great to see so many people I grew up with and we all have kids now who are getting to know each other. That's terrific. I am looking forward to the 7 weeks.

MSJGA/First Tee of Memphis Fall Session Begins!

This past Saturday was the first session of the fall and it kicked off with a bang. There is a "new" energy in the building and its great. They kids were excited, especially the older ones. It was great to see so many older kids take up the game. I was THRILLED beyond words. I hope they come away seeing golf is just as cool as the other sports AND that you can participate in it far longer than any of the others sports.

I also wanted to point out how much we all appreciate the instructors who volunteer their time to our kids. These gentlemen don't get the credit they deserve. They do an outstanding job with our kids and you can see that it is a labor of love for all of them. They love to help the kids and that is so important. I applaud them all. Thank you gentlemen for all you do.

Congratulations TIGER!

If you missed the conclusion of the first ever golf PGA FedEx Cup playoffs this past weekend, you missed a clinic on golf. http://www.pgatour.com/2007/tournaments/r060/09/17/playoffs_end/index.html.
Tiger Woods put on a show all four days, leaving no doubt who the number one player in the world is and why. The guy was freaking AWESOME! I couldn't wait to get home to watch him. I STILL have it saved on my TiVo so I can enjoy it over and over again. Other players did extremely well and you saw a lot of fresh faces that are going to be the faces to watch in the future, namely Camilo Villegas.

Way to go Tiger!!! love the new FedEx Cup playoffs. A little tweaking here and there and I guarantee it is going to grow the game.

Bria Sanders featured in ONE GREAT KID!

My mother ran across an article that appeared in our local paper, The Commercial Appeal this past Tuesday, September 18 that featured Bria. She cut it out for me but I don't think a scanned copy will show on the blog. I tried to access the article that appeared on Tuesday but they list it as an ARCHIVE now, meaning you have to pay. If I can access it will try to get it and post it here.

Bria is a wonderful young lady. She is very intelligent and quite the conversationalist. I always enjoy her. Her dad, Mike Sanders (seen in the photo with Bria), gives new meaning to being a "Dedicated Dad." I watched him with her and I wish all African American girls had a father like him. He is ALWAYS there for Bria, ever patient, always helping Bria and any of the other kids out there. Just to give you an example, a few weeks ago my son and others played with Bria at the Pro Duffers Sickle Cell Tournament in Tunica. I was taking photographs on the course and I noticed Bria and her Dad off to the side practically off the course. I thought perhaps they were waiting to tee off but I saw Mike and Bria standing in front of a cotton field and I was brought nearly to tears as I saw him teaching her about our history. About how our ancestors had to stand in the field picking cotton all day. He was teaching her to be proud of her heritage, something I feel is sorely lacking amongst African American youth today. It was a moving experience and I don't think they ever saw me watching but I did manage to get this shot as they were walking back on the course.

Nike Golf unveils SQ SUMO Irons

Okay, its that time of the year where Nike starts to introduce it's new products. I got wind today of the new irons they are releasing on November 1.

The look pretty cool. I know my son and I will have to give it a try. Didn't much care for hte CCi Irons. Perhaps these Sumo Irons will have better luck. Rumor also has it that Nike is upgrading the Slingshot Irons. I'll post that information if it becomes available.

Nike to Introduce the KARMA Golf Ball

Well you all know that Clifton and I are unashamedly Nike golf aficionados. To that end, I am making you all aware of their new golf ball the KARMA that is to be released November 1, but I'd bet a dollar you will be able to get them at Golf Galaxy late October. They always seem to get the new Nike Balls in when others can't. The ball is geared to the casual golfer-me and it isn't expensive. It is designed with golfers who swing slow in mind. As was the Mojo and now Juice balls presented by Nike, the Karma is sure to be a hit as well.

35th Annual Walter Evans Memorial Sickle Cell Tournament

One of the several reasons I am proud to be associated with and my son to be a participant of the Mid-South Junior Golf Association/The First Tee is because of involvement in events such as this, the Pro Duffers Annual Golf Tournament. The Pro Duffers is a national association comprised of professional citizens who are amateur golfers. To learn more about them go to http://www.produffersusa.org/. The local chapter here puts on this 2-day event at Labor Day and the proceeds from the event benefit the sickle cell center at the Regional Medical Hospital (The MED).

My son along with 3 other fellow golfers were extended an invitation to participate in this event by local pediatrician Dr. William Terrell. The main purpose of them participating in this event was to raise money and awareness about Sickle Cell (http://www.sicklecelldisease.org/) and to network with professionals to help prepare them for college and careers. A chance for them to be mentored by older African American golfers.

It was a wonderful weekend and an extraordinary event. The Pro Duffer men did an outstanding job organizing the event. All with little female input. The junior golfers had an absolute ball despite the fact that we had to wake up long before the sun rose to get down to Tunica, Mississippi in time to tee off. It was great to see them enjoy the game and have such wonderful conversations. I marvel at who they are as people. They make me want to be a better adult.

RANTING!!! Golf vs. Football! Why do we have to choose one?

Well, school has started and it seems we have been going 100 mph since we returned from San Diego. Clifton plays football and plays the position of quarterback and so we had to make a decision as to whether to try and play both sports at school, as he had for the past 2 years or concentrate only on one and his school work since he's started high school and the grades count from here on to college.

This was really a tough call for my family. Clifton loves both sports equally and that made it all the more difficult so it was time to pull out the pen and paper and make a list of pros and cons for playing and not playing each sport. We came to the conclusion that he would not play golf because we felt that the coaches would use it as an excuse not to play him at the quarterback position since it was a foregone conclusion that he would have to miss a lot of football practices to play the school tournaments and EVERY year we have had to deal with coaches not wanting him to play the quarterback position though in my mind and others he is CLEARLY the most qualified. Funny how these same coaches had absolutely no problem letting him play on defense. It is STILL VERY hard for African American boys who want to play the quarterback position(See this site-be patient as it loads slowly http://www.myspace.com/blackqb). They are treated like no other African American football player and it starts very early, to discourage them from playing that position. It is really sad that this is the situation in 2007 and that my son had to choose NOT to play golf solely because we had a strong feeling (based on the way the coach treated him last year and this year too) it would be USED against him. I am certain in my heart of hearts it would have come to that.

However, Clifton will continue to play at Mid-South Junior Golf Association (MSJGA) http://www.msjg.org/, of which I have renewed and deeper appreciation, respect and admiration (more on that later on in this entry). And he will continue to play on the statewide tour with the United States Junior Golf Tour and other benefit tournaments to keep his skills up.

Golf is a great game and I don't ever want him to give it up. Football is a great game too BUT there is the element of biased coaches who can ruin your chances at playing, thus decreasing the odds that you will be considered for a college scholarship. In golf it is very hard to discriminate against a player ONCE you let them play. In football the coaches can let you play but call plays that they know won't be successful or that play down your strengths at the quarterback position and play up your weaknesses, thus making the player look unqualified i.e., Kordel Stewart with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Chris Leak with the Florida Gators. I imagine Peyton Manning was never treated the way my son has been treated when he decided all he wanted to do was play quarterback. Peyton AND his brother were no doubt encouraged by their coaches while my son is torn (or at least they attempt to-he is too strong minded to let them) down at nearly every turn, when all he wants to do is play a game he loves, help his team win and enjoy his teenage years. Why can't my son?

And that is why I LOVE golf. That type of racism when it comes to playing doesn't happen in golf. A coach would have hard time hiding your talent if they let you play. The racism here is largely a matter of economics and on occasion some racist individuals at the courses. Golf is a EXPENSIVE sport BUT if you have the will, you can find an affordable place to play.

My college best friend was in town last week and she works for a major corporation and is highly successful and we were discussing how racism is on the rise again in America and whites aren't shy about acting racist towards us. Almost as if they are daring us. As if we don't deserve to be the quarterbacks and CEOs because we are black, despite the fact we are the best. It is hard to be an African American in America, a country where the blood of our ancestors more than ANY other group was spilled in building this country. THAT is the truth and so I refuse to let anyone or anything deny my son the chance that so many people slaved, fought and died for, for him to just have the OPPORTUNITY to a better life. It seems that whites are offended at our presence, that we just might be better than some of them. What other reason could it be?

Getting back to the point I made earlier about my renewed appreciation for MSJGA. That organization was founded for the sole purpose of exposing African American youth to the game of golf and it is recognized across the country. I have seen the decline of the program since they became affililated with The First Tee organization (sometimes getting bigger doesn't equate to getting better) but last weeks orientation was the BEST I have seen in the years my son has been there and it reminded me of how much African Americans need our own to mentor us. They just want to help ALL youth, no matter the color learn the game of golf. I came away from that orientation so excited and feeling great about the chance to help kids learn and play a great game no matter their color. I realized that without institutions like MSJGA, a child like mine would never had had a chance to take up the game. I am GRATEFUL to all the positive African American men and women at the MSJGA who donate long hours, their own income and transport our kids all over town to play golf. They open the doors for our kids.

Junior World Golf Championship in San Diego

Upon learning that he had been fortunate enought to be selected to the Tiger Woods Junior Golf Team back in April, my son set out to really prepare himself. He really worked hard leading up to the Junior World (one the oldest if not oldest junior golf championship) and was hitting the ball better than I have ever seen. We were pumped up! He knew and I knew that he could win his age division. That is how confident we were. But we neglected to factor in one unforeseen element-fear/stress.

The morning we get to the airport to leave for San Diego we find out our flight out of Memphis had been canceled. After much discussion, they put us on another airline to get us to Phoenix were we were to connect with our original airline. However, when we arrived in Phoenix, no luggage and more importantly NO GOLF CLUBS. My son immediately started to panic because he had his game plan planned out and now it was shot to pieces. He wasn't able to practice that afternoon and we spent the afternoon waiting at the airport and then finally going to the hotel to check in and they going back to the airport to see if the clubs got on the next flight. They finally came in 2 flights later but the day was basically tense and stress filled. However, San Diego was beautiful and we just took a drive to the ocean to see the boats. A perfect way to end the evening.

The next day he gets to the driving range and can't hit a ball straight. I mean, we laugh about it now but at that time it was pure torture to watch him struggle on an international stage for FOUR DAYS. Thus, the fear factor kicked in. He was fearful that he wouldn't play well. They had junior golfers from all over the world; Mexico, Malaysia, Australia, South Africa, England, Japan, Korea, etc. So he was pretty embarrassed that he couldn't perform like he knew he could. BUT, that is the game of golf. One day it courts you, the next day it dumps you.

Looking back, he says he had a wonderful time as you can see as he prepares for the AWESOME "Parade of Flags" and really looks forward to next year. He didn't make the cut but the way he played, he was and is my hero. He shot 88 and 84. All with his distance with his irons short on every shot. He is a true TROOPER!!! He didn't quit on himself. He gutted his play out and came out a stronger minded young African American young man able to effectively handle adversity. The experience was truly a once in a lifetime experience and we enjoyed it immensely.

Tiger Woods even sent the team members an autographed cap since he was unable to make it, and THAT so made the trip worthwhile.

TGA Junior Golf Summer Tour

This was my son's first year to sign up for the Tennessee Golf Association Junior Tour (Home - TGA Junior Tour) and he had a wonderful experience. He really enjoyed the fact that most of them were one-day tournaments but STILL very competitive and that they had so many tournaments in close proximity to Memphis. No overnight stays required and THAT saves a ton of money.

The kids seem to really enjoy the tour. They were all very relaxed and friendly, which is way different than I see at other tournaments. Ms. Lissa Bradford (lbradford@pgahq.com) , the Executive Director of the tour, was a real jewel. She really welcomed my son and a couple of other MSJGA junior golfers with open arms. I appreciate her help and support. It meant a lot. We can hardly wait until next summer.

PGA Tournament a BLAST!!!

I am behind on my post. It has been a very, very busy summer and now school has started back. Hopefully, I will have more time to update my entries. I am going to try to catch things up over the next two weeks. Be patient with me. THANKS!

We attended the Standford-St. Jude PGA event in Memphis and it was my first time actually attending a professional golf tournament and I had a ball. I know for sure I will be attending again next year. Mid-South Junior Golf Association junior golfers are given tickets to attend the event each year and I am grateful for the opportunity to have been able to attend with my son and his friends.

There were so many good things about the tournament that I don't know where to start. You aren't allowed to take cameras. My son went attended all 4 days and I only went one day, that Saturday. I was surprised it wasn't more crowded. I guess golf is not the draw that basketball and football are but hey, I won't complain because that just made it easy for us to see and meet some of the golfers.

I went specifically to see my 2nd favorite golfer, Camilo Villegas and it was worth it. I didn't get a chance to meet him but I followed him for 4 rounds and he noticed I was following him. I think he appreciated it since there were that many African Americans there and you could probably count the number of African American women on one hand. Be I could tell he was appreciate. He even did his signature "Spiderman pose" as he read a putt. We he did that and my day was made!

I got chance to see John Daly, Sergio Garcia, Vijah Singh, Will MacKenzie to name a few. The highlight for me was to meet the new phenom, Anthony Kim. He is a rookie and I don't think many people know who he is just yet. My son and his friend were mesmerized watching Mike Weir hit practice balls and I was just roaming around close to them and I looked around and saw Kim, his caddie and another young lady leaving the putting practice green. I freaked out! I couldn't believe I was looking at him so I called out his name and this young rookie came over to were I was, along with the others in his group and just started talking. It was great. Then, out of no where his caddie gives me a prototype Nike ball. That ball is NEVER going to touch the grass (smile). My son is dying to hit it though. I have told him absolutely NO, much to his dismay. Kim was soooooooo nice and I am an even bigger fan of his now at his kindness is speaking to me and giving me an autograph.

My son was able to met none other than, Venus Williams one day he attended the tournament. He went with a school friend that day who had clubhouse passes for them and a rain delay caused the players to have to come inside and Venus is dating golfer Hank Kuehne, a former US Amateur Champion, who was playing in the event. My son calls me from his cell phone just THRILLED and said, "Mommy, guess who is sitting next to me? Venus Williams!" And to top that off after the rain delay they went back on the course and my son's friend said, "Look, I think she is waving at you." My son said he looked across the course and there Venus was looking, smiling and waving at him. He was done of course. His day was made.

On of his friends idolizes Vijah Singh and he got the chance to meet him and get his autograph. This kid, as I was told by my son, was SPEECHLESS when he got next to Vijah. He said his friend couldn't say a word after all the talk he had done on what he was going to say if he saw Vijah. It was quite funny to hear my son and his friend talk about that ordeal.

A fabulous time was had by all in our group and I can't wait until next year. My son says we need to save our pennies now because he wants the package that includes the clubhouse. I told him he needs a JOB!

The only draw back or negative about my experience was that about 4 staffers asked us to show our tickets even BEFORE we got to the gate to go in. I know we stood out being just a handful of African Americans there but gee whiz. What did they think, that we didn't belong there?. Just absurd and so Memphis.

All in all, if you can, get your tickets and PARKING PASS for next year and go enjoy a day or two. You can bring your own lawn chair and sit down a one hole all day and just watch the golfers come to that hole. And the food was great. Something for everyone. A great family outing.

12th Annual Exxon-BFI Tournament a Huge Success

My son and I returned last night from the Exxon-BFI Tournament in Greenville, Mississippi and were pleased with his performance. This tournament brings junior golfers ages 5 - 18 from across the country but most participants originate primarily from the southern region, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Florida and Texas. It is quite in impresssive for a junior tournament and it is a "well-oiled" machine and runs smoothly. Last year was my son's first year to play the tournament and I can tell you he and I were both a little shocked by the sheer numbers of participates and the places they came from to play. This was the 12th year and it will probably getting BIGGER every year. It is ranked on the National Junior Golf Scoreboard. You pay a fee to play the tournament and it isn't associated with school golf. It is really nice and they have a banquet on Saturday for the junior golfers but I will admit we skipped it this year. Last year Clifton said it keep us there too long and he didn't feel rested the next day so we pulled a "no-show," opting for the extra rest in the hotel room.

Junior Golfers from Memphis were out in huge numbers. We saw a lot of our friends and other junior golfers we've played with there and they represented Memphis well. I think that Memphis University School had the most number of junior golfers (5) from any school in this area particiapting in the tournament. Standford St. Jude PGA Tournament Week June 4-10

The BIGGEST golf event of the year in Memphis will descend upon our city next week at Southwind Golf Course. It is the 50th year of the newly renamed Standford St. Jude. It was previously called the FedEx St. Jude. If you or your junior golfer have never attended a PGA tournament, then here is your chance.

Tiger Woods won't be in the field but there are many other outstanding golfers to come out and see (Camilo Villegas -my personal favorite, Adam Scott, Sean O'Hair, Sergio Garcia and on and on). They have some up-and-coming young guns and some well-know veteran players. It is a good field so I think we're in for a real treat in seeing some terrific golf played in our city. Sign-Up for Summer Golf

This post is a little past deadline but I just found out about the sign up over the weekend.

There is a program in Memphis called the Mid-South Junior Golf Association that is now partnering with a national organization called The First Tee. This is a program to introduce your child to golf but they ARE NOT A GOLF TEACHING PROGRAM. I want to be clear about that. They are more about teaching kids life skills such as honesty, integrity, responsibility, etc. They try to teach these through the game of golf. If you wanted to introduce your child to golf this would be a good chance to do so. They may still allow sign-ups for first time students. They are located off Airways on Ball Road at the former Army Depot Golf Course. The facility is owned by Memphis Athletic Ministries but MSJGA/First Tee rents from them. As I said, this is a good introduction to golf with wonderful educational opportunities for scholarships and attending leadership academies in the summer. However, and this is a BIG however, if you find you child really wants to play golf then you will need to take steps on your own to get them lessons from a private teacher, get them a good set of golf clubs and take them to golf courses to play. If your child really doesn't have an interest in playing competitive tournament golf but doesn't mind learning about the game and playing in less competitive events they sponsor, then this First Tee program is an excellent program. They also have two programs that are for girls only. I don't know much about them since I have a son but it might be worth looking into.

Summer Junior Tour

The Tennessee Golf Associaion Junior Tour (TGA Junior Tour), formerly the Vince Gill Tour, is fast becoming a top-rated summer tour for junior golfers. They have age divisions for juniors that play well and juniors that can play but are beginners to tournament golf. There is something for ages 6 - 18. The TGA Junior Tour is now open to sign up. Tournaments are filling up fast! Join now to be assured a spot in area tournaments. You may sign-up for up to 7 tournaments and they have tournaments all across the state of Tennessee.

If your child has the desire to play on his school's golf team and play college golf then tournament experience is a MUST. It isn't for everyone but you won't know unless you try. Local Junior Golfers Play College Golf

On a chilly Tuesday morning on April 27 at Tunica National Golf Course I had the privilege of watching several former MSJGA golfers participating in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Golf Championship, better known as the SWAC http://swac.org/index.htm. I went there specificially to watch the play of former Germantown High student Reggie Newton, who is now a sophmore at Jackson State University in Jackson Missississippi and found out that Reggie wasn't the only one out of the MSGJA program playing in the tournament. Playing along with Reggie were Joe Brisco of Grambling University, John Larry Dorse with Alabama A&M, and John Thornton of Texas Southern University. It was the first collegiate golf match I'd ever attended and I throughly enjoyed it. I met some wonderful college coaches and players. I was overwhelmed seeing so many African American young men playing collegiate golf. It was pretty exciting. They all attend college on a golf scholarships thanks to Mr. Charles Hudson, the PGA professional at Pine Hill Golf Course and founder of MSJGA.

WELCOME Parents and Junior Golfers

Hi Everyone and WELCOME to the POG BLOG!

My son and I took up the game 4 years ago and I guess you can tell it has become a part of our lifestyle. He is a far better player than I can ever hope to be but I have a passion for the game. It is that passion and what I perceived to be a serious lack of available information from my son's junior golf program that spurred the idea of creating an information medium. At a local driving range a gentleman saw my son hitting balls and he asked me if he was on a junior tour. I had no idea what he was talking about or that there was even such a thing because in the 2 years we had been in a golf program I had not heard anything about any tournaments except their own. I was frustrated at wanting to know and learn more about junior tournaments locally, regionally and nationally and it seemed no one ever had any information or if they did, only a few favorites were told about it. I thought it was unfair and I set out to try to find a way to get the information out to ANYONE that cares to read this blog.

Originally, I had begun work on a newsletter 2 years ago but I never got it published and distributed because it took so much time and money. After seeing how important and useful a blog can be to and for parents and students at my son's school, I thought WHY NOT for the parents of junior golfers. That was the brainchild behind this blog. I then asked a person I know who does a great job at blogging to help me but they indicated they were too busy. More frustration yet again! So I set out to learn all I could about how to blog and VIOLA! Here we have the first entry to my new blog. We live in the Information and Technology Age so we might as well use it.

I hope that it becomes a useful tool for those of you who, like me, have a child who is serious about golf and aspires to perhaps play at the collegiate level. I also hope that it gives exposure to our junior golfers who might otherwise fall under the radar in the junior golfing communities or at their own local golf programs. So if you have interesting information about a local junior golfer then send it to me and I will get it posted.

POG will be a blog geared primarily to the present and former junior golfers in and around the city of Memphis area. Its purpose is to provide news, updates on local players, golf and tournament information and commentary for the parents of junior golfers and other junior golfers in our area.

This is just the beginning of what I hope will become a trustworthy, informative and enlightening medium mixed in with a little humor. I cannot say the frequency with which I will post but I will do my best to update once a week. So bookmark the blog and tell other parents and interested golfers about it.
